Morét-Brealynn: A New Promising Pinot Noir Label

Morét-Brealynn (More-ay Bree-lynn) Wines is a new label of Russian River Pinot Noirs that carries the name of its founder, Morét Brealynn.  The three wines reviewed here are her inaugural vintage.  They are all delicious and easy-drinking, young wines made in small quantities.  They are fresh tasting with good concentration and offer ripe dark red berry fruit flavors of the kind that pair well with a variety of bold flavored dishes.  We paired the wines with a campanelle pasta of pork and lamb and steak-frites.

The Morét Brealynn label is the product of a collaboration between Morét and veteran winemaker Adam Lee.  Although her name is French, Morét is California raised and of 100% Mexican descent.  She has been in the wine industry for over a decade and has an unbridled passion for wine.  She is currently General Manger of Adam Lee’s Clarice and Beau Marchais wines. The grapes for her lovely wines were sourced from Jim Pratt, who manages vineyards throughout Sonoma County, including Lakeview Vineyard in Russian River Valley.  As discussed in our recent report California Chardonnay: Terroir and Winemaking in Sonoma, Jim Pratt is one of Sonoma County’s premier growers.

The Wines

Morét-Brealynn 2020 Stray Dogs Red Wine Blend California ($50) 91 The 2020 Stray Dogs Red is a blend of 56% Grenache, 33% Pinot Noir and 11% Mourvèdre. Ruby red in color, it offers a very pleasant bouquet of strawberry compote with a hint of cranberry. A youthful wine, it is fruit forward, lively on the attack and slightly astringent with nice red berry fruit flavors that persist on the palate. Mouth filling and pleasant tasting. Excellent with the Emilia Romagna Style Campanelle Pasta.

Morét-Brealynn 2021 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($50) 92  The 2021 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir displays dark berry and cherry scent with a slight herbal edge. It is silky on the attack with a nice mix of fresh dark fruit and light fresh herbal notes. It is a nicely focused wine with good richness of flavor and a pleasant finish. May be slightly more evolved than the Lakeview Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Morét-Brealynn 2021 Lakeview Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River Valley ($70) 93 The 2021 Lakeview Vineyard Pinot Noir offers fresh, grapey dark red cherry and berry aromas. It is rich and silky on the palate with good density and acid balance. A delicious wine, it displays excellent depth of fruit with good viscosity and persistence. Still quite youthful and easy drinking, it has round tannins and an excellent finish. It paired superbly with steak-frites.
