Biblia Chora’s Fine Wines from the Slopes of Macedonia’s Mt Pangeon

In April of this year we visited Ktima Biblia Chora, established on the slopes of Mt Pangeon in Macedonia in 2001, and tasted its outstanding portfolio of fine wines. Biblia Chora was established by two of Greece’s highly respected winemakers, Vangelis Gerovassiliou and Vassilia Tasaktsarlis. Located in the Pangeon region of Macedonia, the estate is one of Greece’s finest producers of premium wine.  Our reviews of Biblia Chora’s wines are given below.

Vassilis Tasaktsarlis graduated in Chemistry at Greece’s Aristotle University in 1988 and later obtained a degree in enology from the University of Bordeaux studying under the famed Denis Dubourdieu.  Before teaming up with Vangelis Gerovassiliou to establish Biblia Chora, he was enologist and head of production at Domaine Costa Lazaridi.  Vassilis is credited with introducing New World style aromatic whites in Greece, especially Sauvignon Blanc. Vangelis Gerovassiliou graduated from Aristotle University in 1974 and obtained a degree in enology at the University of Bordeaux under the renowned Emile Peynaud.  He served as winemaker at Domaine Porto Carras and was instrumental in the revival of the Malagousia variety.  Vangelis also developed his family vineyard in Epanomi into Ktima Gerovassiliou, another of Greece’s outstanding wineries.

Today, Biblia Chora has an organic vineyard of 35 ha at the food of Mount Pageo.  The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 400m on rocky soils, and the winery is located in the middle of the vineyard. The winery’s US portfolio consists of 16 wines made of both international and indigenous varieties sourced from Crete, Nemea and elsewhere in Greece. Its wines are organized into the following labels:  Ktima, Areti, Sole, Biblinos, Plagios, Ovilos and Etos.    The Ovilos wines are this winery’s top-of-the-line cuveé.

Biblia Chora wines are exported to European countries, Canada and the US. The U.S and Canadian importer is Cava Spiliadis.
