Barden Wines: Sourcing Sta Rita Hills’ Finest Vineyards

Winemaker Doug Margerum has developed this label for his super premium wines sourced from the finest vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Barden white wines are barrel fermented, aged mainly in new French oak, go through battonage in 225 to 600 liter barrels, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. These wines are outstanding and will likely improve with aging.

BARDEN 2019 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills ($52) 92  This Chardonnay is sourced form the Sanford & Benedict and the Donnachadh vineyards.  It offers aromas of orchard fruit with light notes of butterscotch  on the nose.  It is crisp on the attack with excellent acidity and balance.  Aged 10 months sur lie in 60% new French oak, it is mouth filling with a firm palate and a long finish.

BARDEN 2019 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Sta. Rita Hills ($82) 94 The Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict displays a medium gold color and offers aromas of ripe orchard fruit along with smoky toasted nuts.   It is soft on the attack with more toasty oak notes and ripe apple/pear flavors. Broad and creamy on the palate, it has excellent depth of  flavor and a hint  of butterscotch on the  finish.  Layered flavors, complex and rich with good underlying acidity.

BARDEN 2020 Fonte Sta. Rita Hills ($36) 91    The 2020 Fonte is a blend of 37% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Blanc and 30% Pinot Gris sourced from La Encantada and La Rinconada vineyards.   Light straw in color, it offers aromas of white fruit and minerals on the nose.   Crisp on the attack, it reveals flavors of white melons and pear with a  hint of honeysuckle and finishes with good balance.  A lively and crisp wine with more  minerals and acidity than fruit.  Aged 10 months sur lie in used barrels of different sizes.

BARDEN 2019 Pinot Blanc Sta. Rita Hills ($32). 92 This 100% Pinot Blanc is source from the La Encantada Vineyard.  It displays a light  straw color and offers aromas of almond and a subtle hint of  gardenia.  It is crisp on the attack and reveals excellent depth and firm texture in the mouth with  a slight note of grapefruit pith.  Finishes clean, crisp and firm with rich extract and a lingering finish.

BARDEN 2018 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills ($68) 92  Sourced from La Encantada, Sanford & Benedict, John Sebastiano, Radian, Donnachadh and Spear vineyards, this Pinot Noir displays a  light medium ruby color with a spicy nose of light fruit and vanilla aromas that carry through to the palate.  Again a lot of spice and herbal/briar notes that dominate the underlying  red berry and somewhat candied fruit.

BARDEN 2018 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Sta. Rita Hills ($82)  90+ Medium  ruby.  Reveals lots of fruit and wood spice on the nose.  Somewhat dry on the attack and palate, too.  Good density and finishes very dry but with lingering rich extract.  Fermented 50% whole cluster and aged 10 months in 46% new French oak barriques.  Mouth filling with good breadth in the mouth but the tannins are firm.

BARDEN 2018 Pinot Noir Radian Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills ($125) 95 Medium-light ruby.  Perfumed red cherry skin, dried rose petals, dark cherry essence on the nose.  Full in the mouth with dry tannic structure but lots of dense, darker red cherry fruit.  Lovely purity and excellent balance with firm but fine tannins.  Lots of character and complex, layered flavors.

BARDEN  2018 Syrah Sta. Rita Hills ($60 ) 93  Medium dark red.  Savory herbs with nuances of toasted oak  Dark red berry, cranberry and plum fruit.  Full and lush on the palate, big and broad with good acidity.  Not at all over ripe but shows some dark fruit on the palate along with minerals.  Super rich extract on a very long finish with savory elements showing again.  Very flavorful with touch of loam earth and round tannins.    Sourced from the Donnachadh and Peake vineyards.
