Flora Springs of Napa Valley: New Releases of Soliloquy and Trilogy

Flora Spring is a family-owned and operated winery in Napa Valley producing superior quality, handcrafted wines.   The two wines reviewed here are their flagship white wine Soliloquy and red blend Trilogy.  In our review of the previous vintages of these wines we were impressed with the depth of flavor and fruit-rich character of these wines and recommended them to our readers.   Happily the two new releases are equally good, if not better, as we indicate in our tasting notes below. In addition to the wines reviewed here, Flora Springs makes several high end, single varietal Cabernet Sauvignons, which we hopefully will review in the future.

First, some background information on the winery.  Located at the base of the Mayacamas mountain range in Napa Valley, the 280 acre Flora Springs estate, formerly home to Louis Martini, was purchased by Jerry and Flora Komes in 1977. They established the winery at the urging of their children, John Komes and Julie Garvey, who have continued to run the winery with their spouses and children.  In 2020  the families sold the Flora Springs estate to Daniel and Florence Cathard, who also own Château Smith-Haut Lafitte and other wineries in France.  However, the Komes and Garvey families retain ownership of the Flora Springs name as well as the  200 acres of Napa Valley vineyards.

The Wines

Flora Springs 2020 Soliloquy Napa Valley ($50) 91   Sourced from the winery’s proprietary Sauvignon Blanc clone, Soliloquy is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and  Malvasia,.  The 2020 Soliloquy reveals a lovely citrus aroma with hints of orchard fruit.  It is crisp and lively on the palate with excellent concentration.  It is beautifully balanced with a soft silky texture and  lively acidity that gives  it a vibrant finish.

Flora Springs 2019  Trilogy Napa Valley ($85) 93   This is the 35th vintage of this highly successful, flagship wine. A blend of  75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec, it displays a  deep garnet-purple color and  offers up aromas of cassis, blackberries, and dark red cherries  with hints of herbs, vanilla, and baking spices.  It is full-bodied and fleshy with bold flavors and excellent concentration.  Velvet-like on the palate, it has round firm tannins and a long finish.   This wine will have a long life.

Flora Springs 2019 Flora’s Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($175) 93  Semi-opaque purple. Flora’s Legacy reveals the richness and finesse of high-end Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh and complex in aroma and flavors, it shows crème de cassis and dark cherries with nuances of savory herbs, underbrush, and baking spice. Finishes with lingering flavor and gripping tannins. A full bodied, finely crafted wine that offers immense enjoyment now but even more with additional time in cellar.  Sourced from vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville; matured 18 months in 80% French and 20% American oak. You need to be a club member to purchase.
