Wrath Vineyards of Monterey:  2019 Releases

Wrath is a small artisanal winery located along the foothills of the Santa Lucia Highlands in the Monterey AVA.  It crafts  high quality premium Pinot Noir Chardonnay, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc from its own 72-acre San Saba Estate Vineyard and vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands.  Production is small and distribution is limited.  Winemaking is in the hands of the talented Sabrine Rodans.  In this article, the IWR reviews Wrath’s new releases, which readers will surely enjoy.  We have been following the success of Wrath over the years including tastings with Sabrine at the winery.

 Wrath 2019 Chardonnay San Saba Vineyard Monterey ($49) 91  The 2019 Chardonnay San Saba combines grapes from four clones in equal amounts grown on the estate: 96, Mt. Eden, Kistler, and Wente. Selected barrels are used for fermentation with commercial and native yeast. The wine is aged in 40% new French oak for 10 months. The wine displays aromas of citrus with prominent oak. It has a soft texture with good acidity and good  concentration.

Wrath 2019 Fermata Chardonnay Monterey ($35) 89  The 2019 Fermata Chardonnay is a blend of the Mt. Eden and three other clones from the San Saba Estate. It differs from the estate bottling having been processed by 50% malolactic fermentation. The wine is spicy and crisp in character with high acidity and hints of toast. It reveals light orchard fruit with a rather dry finish.

Wrath 2019 115/667 Pinot Noir Montegrey ($35) 92  This Pinot Noir is a blend of 115 and 667,  two popular Dijon clones from the San Saba estate vineyard. The grapes are processed and aged separately and then blended; 20% is fermented whole cluster. The wine offers flavors of ripe cherries with toast and hints of herbs. It has good concentration, crisp acidity and freshness and a soft silky mouth feel. A lovely wine and terrific value.

Wrath 2019 Ex Vite Pinot Noir Monterey ($38) 90 The Ex Vite Pinot Noir is 100% whole cluster fermented from estate grapes. It is a flavorful blend of clones 667, 777 and Swan and is aged in 30% French oak for around 10 months. It is soft and round on the palate, fresh tasting and slightly tart on the finish.
Wrath 2019 Pinot Noir San Saba Vineyard Monterey ($49) 90 The 2019 Pinot Noir San Saba Vineyard displays aromas and flavors of dark cherry, raspberry and plum with hints of herbs and toast. A cool climate wine, it exhibits crisp acidity and freshness on the palate with a silky mouth feel and long finish.
Wrath 2019 Destruction Level Monterey ($39) 91 The 2019 Destruction Level is a Rhone-style blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. The Grenache is sourced from the Alta Loma Vineyard and the Syrah from Wrath’s San Saba estate vineyard, both cool climate sites. Dark ruby in color, the wine reveals a pleasant aroma of ripe blackberries and toasted oak. Soft and silky on the palate, it displays a lush mouth feel with good concentration and a persistent finish. Enjoy this wine with barbecue ribs.
