Established in 2004, Coca i Fitó is an innovative winery which is crafting a wide variety of delicious (and beautifully labeled) wines sourced from Montsant and other appellations such as Priorat, Empordá and Ribeira Sacra. Our first memorable encounter with the wines of Coca i Fitó was several years ago, when we were invited to dinner at the three-Michelin star El Celler de Can Roca in Girona by Miguel Coca i Fitó, one of the brothers of the eponymous Coca i Fitó vineyard in Montsant to taste through their portfolio. It was a magnificent dinner with each dish paired beautifully with the wines by sommelier Josep Roca. In the following review, we take a new look at the wines of Coca i Fitó.
Coca i Fitó is led by brothers, Toni and Miguel Coca i Fitó. Tony is a widely celebrated Catalan winemaker, while Miguel, who has a background in the culinary arts and tourism, is responsible for marketing and business development. The winery is located in DO Montsant, in the village of El Masroig, where the majority of wines are made. The two brothers began a joint winemaking project in 2013 with winemaker Andrea Obenza to produce Tolo do Xisto wines in Ribeira Sacra.
Most of the wines reviewed here are white and red blends consisting of Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Tinta, Carignan and small amounts of other grapes, They are divided into a series of labels according to style and source, although the distinctive features of the labels are not always evident: the Jaspi wines are easy drinking and intended to introduce the wines of the Terra Alta and Monsant appellations; the Aloja wines are wines made of local indigenous varieties, and the Toca de L’Ala wines are made jointly with Roig Parais winery reflecting flint and slate-based soils.
Coca i Fitó 2019 Jaspi Blanc Terra Alta ($25) 91 A very aromatic and flavorful blend of 70% Grenache Blanc and 30% Macabeo sourced from 20-60 year old vines. It is rich and silky on the palate with a leesy mouthfeel and hints of white pear, honey and stones. It is nicely concentrated on the mid-palate with lingering spicy notes and a persistent finish. Coca i Fitó 2017 Jaspi Negre Montsant ($25) 91 Medium dark ruby. A blend of 45% Garnacha, 25% Carignan, and 15% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Black berry,, balsamic and a touch of red notes on the nose and the palate. Ripe and lush on the palate with good density of red and black fruit. Aged four months in French and American oak barrels followed by one year in cement vats.. Drink now.
Coca i Fitó 2018 Aloja Blanc Do Montsant/Falset ($25) 92 The Aloja Blance is a blend of 90% White Grenache and 10% Macabeo sourced from 20-60 year old vines. It is highly aromatic and richly viscous on the palate offering flavors of ripe orchard and stone fruit with hints of minerality. A lovely easy drinking wine. Coca i Fitó 2016 Aloja Negre Montsant/ El Masroig ($25) 91+ The 2016 Aloja Negre is made from 40%Garnacha, 30% Carignan, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah. It is medium ruby in color and has a nose of pure dark red plum cherry and raspberry with a hint of new leather. On the palate is displays a soft round texture with good intensity of flavor, excellent balance, round tannins and a long finish. Aged in French and American oak and concrete tanks.14.5 alc
Single Vineyard Wines
Coca i Fitó 2014 Maragda Montsant/El Masroig ($30) 92 The 2014 Margada is a blend of 55%Garnacha, 25% Carignan. and 20% Syrah sourced from old vines of diverse soils types and aged one year in French and American oak and in amphorae. Medium ruby. The wine offers ripe and concentrated dark red berry fruit and spice on the nose that is mirrored on the palate with a soft texture, round tannins and a persistent finish.
Toca de L’Ala
Coca I Fitó 2017 Toca de L’Ala Emporda/Mollet de Peralda ($25) 90 A blend of old vine Carignan, Garnacha Tinta and Syrah. Soft and ripe on the attack with black berry fruit, minerals, herbal notes and balsamic. It is rather ripe with moderate intensity of flavor on the palate, soft round tannins and a pleasant finish. Easy drinking. Toca de l’Ala 2019 Blanc Emporda ($25) 91 The Tocat de l’Ala is a blend of 60% Garnacha Blanca and 40% Macabeo sourced from 20 to 60 year old vines. Lemon gold in color, it offers aromas and flavors of tropical fruits and herbs. With four months on the lees in stainless steel, it has a soft creamy texture. A delicious easy drinking wine.
Todo do Xisto (Mad about Slate)
Tolo do Xisto 2018 Ruxe Ruxe Ribeira Sacra ($15) 90+ This medium ruby 100% Mencia is soft and silky on the palate and offers fresh aromas and flavors of red plum and herbs with hints of minerals. It is beautifully balanced and easy drinking with soft round tannins and a long finish. Tolo do Xisto 2017 Tolo do Xisto Ribeira Sacra ($37) 92 A 100% old vines Mencia blended with grapes from several vineyards planted on schist soils along the Sil River in Ribeira Sacra. The wine is produced by Coco i Fitó in collaboration with Andrea Obenza. The wine is concentrated with hints of minerals and herbs, has a full mouth feel, soft round tannins, and a long finish.
