Vie di Romans’ Exciting Friuli White Wines: 2014-15

vie de romansGianfranco Gallo crafts some of Friuli’s most impressive white wines at his 53 hectare estate in the commune of Mariano del Friuli in the Isonzo Valley, just south of the Collio DOCG. His vineyards are located in the best part of the valley, in the northeast near Cormons. They have well-drained stony, calcium-rich clay soils created by glacial erosion and sit at about 31 meters above sea level.

Gianfranco Gallo took over the management of this family estate (then called Stella Gallo) in 1978 at the age of 19. He went on to introduce the viticultural and winemaking reforms that are responsible for the excellent quality of today’s Vie di Romans wines. The viticultural reforms included high density planting (6 thousand vines/ha), intensive canopy management, and constraining yields (under 1 kilo/vine).

He began producing single vineyard wines in 1990 and in 1992 began a policy of releasing white wines no sooner than two years after the harvest, a practice that other quality oriented producers in the Friuli are only now introducing.

The winemakers are Gianfranco Gallo and Alberto Pelos. Annual production is about 260 thousand bottles.    Importer: VIAS

Vie de Romans 2015 Dessimis Pinot Grigio Ramato Friuli Isonzo ($40) 92  Light copper color. Showing touches of dried hay and tangerine citrus on the nose, this is an exceptional Pinot Grigio, mouthfilling with savory flavors of herbs, citrus rind, and lingering hints of earth, dried orange and spice. Macerated on the skins for about 20 hours, fermented at a controlled temperature for 35 days, and aged sur lie in steel for 7 months. The fruit comes from the 7.5 ha Dessimis vineyard in Mariano del Friuli.
