Summer Wines from Francis Coppola

CoppolaFrancis Coppola Winery’s  talented winemaker, Corey Beck, has crafted some lovely wines for summer drinking from California’s outstanding 2012 vintage.    Reviewed here are two Sauvignon Blancs and three Pinot Noirs from different collections.  All are  delicious and the same kind of excellent value that we noted in our earlier review of the Francis Coppola Chardonnays.

These wines sourced from different AVAs show the rich diversity of California wine country and Sonoma County,  in particular.   The Sauvignon Blancs reveal  refreshing citrus aromas and crisp acidity;  the Pinot Noir boast pure varietal character with finesse and elegance on  the palate.    All the wines are easy drinking and  food friendly.

Francis Coppola 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Diamond Collection California ($16) 88  This Sauvignon Blanc displays fresh aromas of citrus and melon.  Fermented in stainless steel,  it reveals bright delicate lemon and herbal flavors on the palate with crisp acidity on the finish. A delicious wine for seafood or goat cheese.  Francis Coppola 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Director’s Cut Alexander Valley  ($21) 89  The Director’s Cut Sauvignon Blanc offers ripe citrus (grapefruit)  aromas and flavors from volcanic and hillside vineyards in Alexander Valley.   A step up in quality from the Diamond Collection,  it boasts richness and intensity of flavor,  good acidity, a touch of minerality and freshness on the finish.

Francis Coppola 2011 Votre Santé Pinot Noir California ($14) 87  The Votre Santé Pinot Noir is an easy drinking and very affordable Pinot Noir.  It is sourced from several northern California wine growing regions that gives it bright fruit and spicy complexity. It is also a versatile food wine.  Francis Coppola 2011 Pinot Noir Director’s Sonoma Coast ($16) 88 The Pinot Noir Director’s is a blend of Carneros and Russian River Valley fruit.  It exhibits a deeper ruby color and more red berry fruit flavor than the Votré  Sante.  It is spicy and slightly earthy with good overall varietal character.  Soft on the palate with ripe tannins and bright acidity.  Pleasant tasting and good value.  Francis Coppola 2011 Pinot Noir Diamond Collection Monterey County ($18) 90 The Pinot Noir Diamond Collection is the top wine in this trio. Sourced from cool climate Monterey Country Vineyards, it offers ripe dark cherry fruit aromas and flavors. It also reveals a silky texture, nicely honed tannins and a long lasting finish.  Great value.
