Sandra Tavares: One of Portugal’s Leading Winemakers

We met winemaker Sandra Tavares da Silva a few years ago at Quinta do Vale Dona Maria in the Douro and loved her wines [see the January 2006 issue of the International Wine Review]. This week we once again had the opportunity to meet with her and her winemaking husband Jorge Serôdio Borges at Quinta do Passadouro and their own winery called Wine and Soul, which makes Pintas. We tasted through the Passadouro and Wine and Soul portfolios and found them to be some of the most perfumed elegant, powerful and accessible [i.e., refined tannins] table wines made in the Douro. Here she’s pictured with Mike at Wine and Soul. Sandra also makes the wines at her parent’s estate Quinta de Chocapalha in the Estremadura/Lisboa region. You’ll be able to read more about her and her wines in our upcoming issue where we revisit the wines of Portugal. We very highly recommend the Wine and Soul 2008 Pintas Douro DOC wine. Ask your favorite wine store to set some aside for you when it arrives on our shores. If you just can’t wait, get the 2007 vintage instead; it’s almost as good. And if you’re looking for an excellent value in a daily wine, try the Passa Douro 2007 Vinho Tinto, again from the Douro. At around $10 a bottle, it’s a real bargain. Don
