Oz Clarke: Wine Writer Extraordinaire

We recently lunched with Oz Clarke, author with Margaret Rand of the recently published (2010) Grapes & Wines. This is a must-have book for wine lovers. Organized around grape varietals and the wines they produce around the world, it’s a great reference book but, also, a wonderful way to learn about wine. If you like, say, Cabernet Sauvignon, and are interested in stretching your gustatory knowledge beyond the dozen commercial brands available in your local supermarket, turn to the chapter on this grape to learn about different parts of the world where this grape does well and recommendations of producers and bottlings to look for.

We took the opportunity to, also, taste a couple of bottles of Ribera del Duero that we’ll be reporting on in our upcoming revisit to the Wines of Ribera del Duero. Both the 2006 Bodegas de los Astrales and the 2006 Felix Callejo Reserva were beautiful wines and went superbly with the Beef Carpaccio we ordered as an appetizer and the hanger steak main course. Perhaps Oz will talk about these wines on his BBC television series “Oz and James Drink to Britain” which he presents along with Top Gear star James May.

Thanks to Caroline Mann of Sterling Publishing, who hosted the lunch at Washington’s Jefferson Hotel. To purchase the book, click here.
