Sparkling Wines and Champagne for the Holidays: Best Bets

Just the other day I was asked by a friend to recommend a wine for the holidays. Without hesitation I offered two suggestions. “If you can afford it,” I offered, “drink some good vintage champagne with your holiday meal.” I noted confidently, “You can choose from a wide variety of top champagne houses and small growers like Francois Billon, Gosset, Roederer, Pol Roger, Henriot, Dehours, to name a few.”

“If Chamapgne isn’t your speed,” I suggested. “try a sparkler like: Australian sparkling reds from Prmo Estate, Majella, Bleaasdale, or perhaps Spanish Cavas from Can Rafols dels Caus, Raventos, or Gramona, ” or I went on “Premium sparkling wines from California such as Roedere Estate. Schramsberg, Oregon such as Argyle, Michigan such as Mawby, or Kluge Estate in Virginia to name but a few.” “And of course, I told my friend, breathlessly, “don’t forget those maravelous Franciacortas from Italy like Bellavista and Cá del Bosco.”

Last year at around this time, the International Wine Review issued its Report #14 The World of Sparkling Wines and Champagnes which provided our readers helpful guidance for making their selections for the holidays. The findings and recommendations of this report are still valid I happily noted in re-reading it yesterday and the more I think about it, the more I realize that American consumers are really so lucky to have such wonderful choices of Sparkling Wines and Champagne for the Holidays.
Best wishes for the Holidays.
