Mariano Fernandez Elected Head of International Wine Academy

The International Wine Review congratulates Mariano Fernandez, Chile’s Minister of Foreign Relations, on his election as Chairman of the prestigious International Wine Academy in Geneva, Switzerland. Mariano Fernandez, shown here with Secretary of State Clinton, has a life-long love of wine. This appointment reflects Mariano Fernandez’ international reputation in the world of wine.

Publisher Mike Potashnik and Editor Don Winkler recently met with Minister Fernandez at his office in the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores in Santiago, Chile. We reported on the results of our ten day visit to Chile to learn about newly emerging wine regions and advances in winemaking with special emphasis on Carmenere, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir.

Until his appointment as Minister earlier this year, Mariano Fernandez was Chile’s ambassador to the United States,. We attended some interesting Chilean wine tasting events he periodically organized, including one memorable vertical tasting of Chile’s highly regarded Cousiño Macul’s Antiguas Reservas on April 29, 2008. (see i-winereview.blogspot) During our time together, he became an enthusiastic reader of the of the International Wine Review and encouraged us to write about the wines of Chile for which we are most appreciative.

We wish Minister Fernandez success in his new and exciting wine venture.
