New Artisanal, Israeli Wines from Israeli Wine Direct

Israel has a fast growing, dynamic wine industry.  This tiny Mediterranean country of seven million inhabitants has more than 300 wineries.  Most (75%) of the wine is by ten major commercial wineries such as Carmel, Barkan and Golden Heights (Yarden). The rest is produced by medium-sized companies and by numerous small boutique wineries connected with moshav and kibuttzim throughout the country. Today there are more than 5 thousand hectares under vine in Israel, an increase of more than 55% since the 1990s. Vineyards are found everywhere from the Upper Galilee to the hot dry Negev desert.

In our Report #32: The New Wines of Israel and in other articles, we note that Israel is gaining recognition in international markets for producing high quality wines. In particular Israel has many new and outstanding boutique wineries and garagistes that are handcrafting wines comparable to some of the best in the world.

In this article we review the wines of 12 wineries in Israel represented by Israeli Wine Direct (IDW), a dynamic importer of small artisanal Israeli wines. Initially established in Chicago, Israeli Wine Direct is now based in New York and owned and operated by Agnes Goldberger, Arie Hochberg, and Mayer Jakubovic. The wineries are all family-owned and operated and are both kosher and non-kosher. They are located all over Israel and mainly produce wines from their own vineyards.  Some of the wineries such as Pelter and Margalit are relatively well-known in the US, while others are entering the US market thanks to the visionary importers at Israeli Wine Direct.
