Testarossa Winery: Outstanding 2012 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Releases

Testarossa

Testarossa Winery is among the finest producers of premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California. They handcraft small lots of mostly vineyard designated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from California’s top growers in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Sta Rita Hills, Santa Maria Valley, Chalone and other appellations. In 2012 they produced a bevy of outstanding wines which are among the finest we have reviewed over the years. They exhibit outstanding flavor, complexity and overall balance, while revealing the unique character of the different vineyards from which they are sourced.

Started in a garage in 1993 by Rob and Diana Jensen Testarossa is a Los Gatos-based winery which has grown rapidly and today produces over 15 thousand cases. Its long-time Director of Winemaking is Bill Brosseau, a viticulturist and winemaker, par excellence. Bill works closely with Testarossa’s growers and also directly manages vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. He crafts consistently high quality terroir-based wines year after year from a wide variety of growers and vineyards.

Testarossa’s story is not just about the wine, however. The winery is located in the old Novitiate Winery that was constructed by Jesuits from Santa Clara University in the 19th century as a means to financially support the former seminary college they built on the winery property in 1888, and seminary students volunteered their labor in the vineyards and winery. Rob and Diana met while studying at Santa Clara University.

The 2012 growing season was excellent and the quality of the grapes is revealed in the wines. Weather conditions allowed for long hang time, full ripening of the fruit, and abundant yields. The whites and reds exhibit rich flavors with good acidity and structure that will allow for good aging over the coming years. The Chardonnays can generally be enjoyed now for up to five years; the Pinot Noirs for seven to ten years.

We enjoyed these wines very much and recommend them highly to our readers. Because each of these wines are made in small lots usually under 300 cases, they sell out fast to Club Testarrosa members. For information visit www.testarossa.com or telephone 408-354-6150.
