Anthill Farms is an exciting winemaking project launched in 2004 by a trio of partners: Webster Marquez, David Low and Anthony Filiberti. The partners, who all previously worked at Williams Selyem, are deeply committed to crafting high quality, cool climate single vineyard Pinot Nor, Syrah and Chardonnay sourced from vineyards in Northern California. Anthill’s goals are to make wines that taste good and reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyard and the vintage. Anthill has grown from producing 200 cases in 2004 to around 2,000 cases today, and the quality of the wines is outstanding as revealed in our tasting notes below.
Anthill’s lead winemaker is veteran Anthony Filiberti. Anthony was raised in Sonom County, apprenticed at Oregon’s Bergström and also worked at Hirsch Vineyards in the West Sonoma Coast. He is a non-interventionist winemaker committed to gentle handling of grapes from crushing to bottling. Giving attention to every detail in the winemaking process, he uses oak judiciously and achieves noteworthy low alcohol levels with excellent acidity.
Anthill has a long term lease for the two-acre Abbey-Harris Vineyard, a high altitude vineyard 900-1100 ft above Boonville, which is farmed biodynamically and is the source for their single vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Anthill also sources grapes from several top quality vineyards in Mendocino County, Sonoma County and the Russian River Valley.
In this article we review current releases from the 2017 vintage. The 2017 vintage was highly successful throughout California and these wines are exemplary of the vintage. Because Anthill wines are crafted in small quantities they are not easily found in local wine retail wine stores. The wines are distributed in the US via Skurnik Wines.
