Edoardo Miroglio: Vines, Wines, & Boutique Hotel in Bulgaria

The E Miroglio Winery & Hotel

Italian textile manufacturer Edoardo Mirogolio has created from scratch one of Bulgaria’s most impressive, modern wineries.  In our soon to be published report on The Wines of Bulgaria we rate his wines among the best in Bulgaria, especially the Chardonnay, Mavrud, and outstanding sparkling wines.  Our reviews of the Edoardo Miroglio wines are given below and, also, in our recently published Report # 67 The Wines of Bulgaria.

Alberto Larosca

In 2002 Italian textile manufacturer Edoardo Miroglio purchased the estate that would become the E. Miroglio winery in the village of Elenovo, due east of Plovdiv.  He started out planting 20 ha of Pinot Nero. Today, the winery has over 220 ha of indigenous (Mavrud, Melnik, Rubin and Bouquet) and international grape varieties on the slopes of Saint Ilia at about 400m altitude and at a density of 5 thousand vines/ha, all meticulously planted to match clones and rootstocks to soils and exposures by viticulturist and general manager, Alberto Larosca, a Masters of Oenology graduate from Alba University with 11 years work experience for top producers in Italy’s Barolo region.

Miroglio also built a modern, gravity flow winery and produced his first vintage in 2005. The Elenovo Reserve line is all single vineyard, [Bulgarian] oak aged wines. Miroglio also makes several superb sparkling wines using the method champenoise and aged a minimum of 36 months on the lees. In 2013 Miroglio received organic certification for vineyards that now provide the fruit for its BIO organic wine line.  The winery’s boutique luxury hotel sits above the wine cellar.  Annual production is about 1.3 million bottles. Marco Monchiero is the lead winemaker, and Desislava Baicheva is also winemaker. The wines are stylish and modern with the sparkling wines the best in Bulgaria.
