Gary Farrell: More New Releases 2015 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir From Russian River Valley

Here are more new releases from the Gary Farrell Winery from the 2015 vintage, another great year for the winery and Russian River Valley. As we noted in our earlier reviews, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir crops were small to moderate in size, but the quality is superb. The Chardonnay Russian River Selection harmoniously blends outstanding fruit from several of Russian River Valley’s top vineyards. The Bacigalupi and Rochioli Vineyards are among the finest we’ve tasted of these two single vineyard wines. The Pinot Noirs are equally outstanding revealing purity of fruit and depth of flavor. The bottlings from the Bien Nacido and Toboni vineyards are especially noteworthy.

Gary Farrell 2015 Chardonnay Russian River Selection Russian River Valley ($35) 92 The Russian River Selection is sourced from several of Russian River Valley’s finest vineyards. Starbright with a straw yellow hue, it is fresh and juicy with starfruit, bananas, and touches of tropical fruit on the nose. Aged 9 months in 40% new French barriques and puncheons, it displays a beautiful palate and is mouth filling with bright tangy lemony acidity, lovely minerality, and a superb long rich finish.

Gary Farrell 2015 Chardonnay Bacigalupi Vineyard Russian River Valley ($55) 92 The Chardonnay Bacigalupi Vineyard reveals aromas of ripe apple, touches of yellow stone fruit, with a hint of chamomile on the nose. Aged 8 months in 40% new French barriques and puncheons, it has a soft attack and a, broad juicy palate showing yellow stone fruit, good acidity and rich flavors on a medium long finish.

Gary Farrell 2015 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard Russian River Valley ($60) 93 Medium gold in color, the Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard offers toasted hazelnut, mango, citrus and flint on nose. Following the same barrel regime as the Bacigalupi Chardonnay, it shows tangy acidity on the palate, good breadth and depth, and rich flavors of tropical and stone fruit with excellent length.

Pinot Noir

Gary Farrell 2015 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley ($70) 92  The Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard is a beautiful wine. It is ripe and concentrated with dark cherry fruit flavors, and a note of vanilla bean. Elegant and silky on the palate, it is fruit driven wine with excellent intensity of flavor and long on the finish.

Gary Farrell 2015 Pinot Noir Hallberg Vineyard Dijon Clones Russian River Valley ($60) 91+ This bottling offers lovely, restrained dark cherry fruit aromas and flavors with a touch of underbrush. It has good intensity of flavor and balance, firm tannins, and a medium finish. A pretty wine still in its youth at this stage of development.

Gary Farrell 2015 Pinot Noir Toboni Vineyard Russian River Valley ($65) 93 The Pinot Noir Toboni Vineyard is highly aromatic and displays dark cherry/pomegranate flavors. Elegant and silky on the palate, it reveals excellent balance with good density of dark fruit flavors and a persistent finish. A terrific wine.
