These six new 2013 and 2014 releases from The Farm Winery in Paso Robles are terrific. We are enthusiastic about them because they reveal outstanding vineyard management and restrained winemaking. As a group these wines offer fruit forward purity, a silky texture and excellent balance. They are also round and mouth filling with good density and just the right amount of ripeness. Oak-aging is relatively long but is well-done thanks to the employment of used oak barrels and puncheons.
Kudos to the partners in this exciting endeavor created in 2009: Former Stanford Business School Alumni, Jim Madsen and his wife Azmina, and renowned Argentine winemaker Santiago Achaval and wife Mercedes. Santiago Achaval is known through out the world for crafting some of the very finest Malbecs in Argentina today.
The Farm Winery 2014 The Dish Paso Robles Adelaida District ($60) 91 “The Dish” is crafted from 100% Grenache grapes from the Terra Bella vineyard one of the highest on the Westside of Paso Robles planted in 2001. It offers a fresh and pure fruit-forward nose of wild dark cherry. On the palate it reveals dense dark fruit flavors, with pepper and spice, firm round tannins, and a long finish. Certainly among the best single varietal Grenaches we have tasted from California. Well done.
The Farm Winery 2013 Touchy-Feely Paso Robles Adelaida District ($60) 93 The 2013 Touchy-Feely is an attractive blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah is also sourced from the Terra Bella vineyard. The addition of the Syrah gives this wine added depth and roundness while maintaining its elegance and overall silky texture. The aging of the wine in 500L puncheons and used barriques nicely moderates the oak influence on the wine.
The Farm Winery 2013 Primal Scream Paso Robles Adelaida District ($60) 92 The Primal Scream is a blend of 73% Syrah and 27% Grenache and is a gorgeous wine offering blueberries and ripe plum aromas and baking spices with excellent intensity of flavor and soft round tannins. Aged 28 months in a balance of new an once-used French oak. Enjoy over the next 8 to 10 years
The Farm Winery 2013 Big Game Paso Robles Adelaida District ($75) 92 The 2013 Big Game has a lush and spicy palate of 46% Syrah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Petit Verdot. It is soft and ripe with a rich and lovely texture of black berries, blue berries and a hint of oak. Aged 24 months in new and used French oak that is nicely integrated in the wine.
The Farm Winery 2013 The Cardinal Paso Robles Adelaida District ($90) 93 The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon opaque ruby Cardinal offers rich dense flavors of black berry, cassis, and plum. It has a lush mouth feel with terrific density of black and red fruit flavors and tremendous persistence on the palate. A beautifully balanced wine with perfect integration of oak, soft round tannins and a long finish. A gorgeous wine reflecting the unique Cabernet flavors of Paso Robles. Drink it over the next decade.
The Farm Winery 2013 LPF Paso Robles Adelaida District ($65) 92 The LPF is a ripe and earthy Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 2% Petit Verdot. It is sourced from the Old Bailey vineyard planted in 1964. Dark ruby in color it is nicely balanced with a soft texture, concentrated dark fruit flavors, and a long finish. Aged 24 months in new and used French oak barriques. This should also last a decade.
