Ferraton Père & Fils is one of the largest and finest producers in the Northern Rhone. A joint venture partnership of the Ferraton family and Michel Chapoutier, it produces some of the region’s finest wines from a modern winemaking facility in Tain-L’Hermitage. Its current vineyard holdings consist of 15 hectares, (some more than 60 years old) which since 1998 have been worked biodynamically. It also operates as a negociant and produces wines from purchased fruit from a wide variety of appellations. We review Ferraton’s current releases below.
Ferraton’s highly talented chief winemaker, Damien Brisset.(pictured left), originally from Bordeaux, visited Washington, DC recently, giving us the opportunity to meet him and taste a selection of his outstanding portfolio of some 30 wines. The line up reviewed here runs the gamut from Ferraton’s tiny single vineyard estate wines (Ermitage) to those of Croze- Hermitage, Cornas and Côtes du Rhône. All the wines are beautifully made, highly approachable, and perfectly balanced with good acidity. The estate wines are especially noteworthy for their refinement, elegance and power. Ferraton Père & Fils 2015 Côtes du Rhône Samorens Blanc ($15) 89 This is a lovely white wine composed of 60% Grenache Blanc, 20% Clairette and 20% Viognier. Fermented in stainless steel, it is medium-bodied with ripe clean citrus flavors. excellent acidity, and a crisp finish. A terrific wine for seafood. Try it also with feta cheese.
Ferraton Père & Fils 2014 Hermitage Les Miaux Blanc ($75) 94+ This superb 100% Marsanne offers an aromatic nose of tropical fruit and spice. On the palate it is ripe and flavorful with a creamy mouth feel. Fermented with native yeast and aged on the fine lees in 600L demi-muid for eight months, it is elegant with excellent acidity, making it a superb food wine.
Ferraton Père & Fils 2014 Côtes du Rhône Samorens Rouge ($14) 89 A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, this is a fresh-tasting juicy wine with good intensity of flavor and overall balance. A very drinkable wine with good acidity and sustainable freshness on the finish.
Ferraton Père & Fils 2013 Croze-Hermitage La Matiniere Rouge ($22) 89 This 100% Syrah is fermented and aged in concrete for 12 months. It displays pure black cherry with concentrated flavors on the plate, good acidity and round tannins. An easy drinking wine.
Ferraton Père & Fils 2011 Hermitage Les Miaux Rouge ($85) 93 The 2014 Hermitage des Miaux is sourced from two outstanding parcels. Crafted from 100% Syrah, it is very rich and dense with a beautiful combination of fruit, spice (black pepper), and toasted oak. Aged 12 months in oak (10% new), it reveals extraordinary purity of black and red fruit, superb balance and a long finish.
Ferraton Père & Fils 2013 Ermitage Les Dionnières Rouge ($108) 94 The 2014 Hermitage les Dionnières is sourced from a 35-year old vineyard located down on the slope. it is destemmed and aged 14-18 months in 20-30% new oak. It is a full-bodied and beautifully balanced, and elegant offering with aromas of black berries and considerable depth of black fruit flavors and minerals. A wine that will evolve and improve over the next 10-15 years.
