Chateau Margene is a tiny winery located in Paso Robles. Established in 1998 by Michael and Margene Mooney it produces small quantities of super premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux style blends from a 5.5 acre estate vineyard. Under the Mooney Family label they produce small quantities of Pinot Noir sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Total annual production is 2,500 cases and most of the wine is only available at the winery and is highly allocated. The wines are crafted by Michael Mooney.
Chateau Margene 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles ($56) 90 The Chateau Margene Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dark ruby color and aromas of blackberry fruit, cedar, earth and spice. Medium weight, it reveals good flavor concentration, firm chalky tannins, and a long finish. Blended with 14% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc.
Mooney Family 2012 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands ($52) 90+ The Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands is a lovely wine with a dark ruby color and spicy red fruit aromas on the nose. It has ripe cherry flavors on the palate with good acidity overall freshness, and noteworthy elegance. Sourced from Pommard 4, and Dijon 113 and 115 clones.
Mooney Family 2012 Pinot Noir Boekenoogen Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands ($68) 88 The Pinot Noir Boekenoogen Vineyard displays a medium dark ruby color and aromas of earthy black cherry fruit. It boasts ripe and spicy Syrah-like fruit flavors with firm round tannins and a persistent finish. A rather rustic Pinot Noir.
