New Releases of 2010 White and Red Burgundies
The 2010 vintage is classic Burgundy. Yields were down significantly—as much as a third from 2009—due to a series of misfortunes. Severe winter frosts did damage to some low lying vineyards. Then a cool wet spring resulted in coulure (poor fruit set) and millerandage (hens and chicks), followed by hail damage in some areas, especially Chablis. However, the tide turned during harvest with cool temperatures that preserve fresh fruit character. The wines are quite a contrast with the 2009 Burgundies we reviewed last year. The 2009s have lower acidity, and their ripe tannins make them accessible early on. The 2010s, on the other hand, have higher, racy acidity and will benefit from cellaring. We recently tasted several newly released 2010 Burgundies imported by JAO Imports. This set of reviews complements the earlier reviews of new releases that we published in June of this year.
